Food labelling can be a complex area of work, and it is important to be confident in the quality of food label translations, legal label compliance, and accurate product description are clearly important, as is adherence to food safety and local food labelling laws. There are limits to what can be achieved in translation, for example if the product is mis-described in the original language, it will also be mis-described in the translation, whilst translators “sense check” work as they go, we can’t guess at the correct source text. There is therefore an important pre-translation task for the client, to ensure that they are completely happy with the source text before we start work. This year better languages has translated more food labels than ever before, including our largest ever single language project. Translators and proofreaders are always native of the target language, professional translators, and have experience of foood label translation.
