Professional translation is an often used term, but what do we mean when we say that we offer a professional translation service? Many people claim to be able to translate, but what we mean by professional translation is that all out translators hold appropriate professional qualifications, and translate in areas where they have relevant expertise. All translators specialise. Different types of translation require different skills. For example legal translation is all about fidelity to the source text, and probably doesn’t need to be very readable, it is judged in terms of its accuracy to the original. Marketing translation in contrast is very different, the flow and feel of the text in the target language is all important here, the translator often needs to be more lateral therefore, and to have the freedom to make changes relative to the original.
